New York City Sanitation Department workers race to add garbage to a warehouse fire raging out of control in Queens Tuesday. Mayor Bloomberg passed the law as a means of saving the city over $32 million a year when compared to the former costs of collecting, transporting, and incinerating the city's garbage using conventional means. Garbage trucks are now dispatched directly from their routes to the scenes of large fires when classified as a total loss by the fire chief on site. (Associated Press)
