Beijing, China (AP) - Bruce Fung, chief architect of Fung Sway Architecture Inc. has undertaken the impossible task of building the largest bamboo building in the world.
His partner, Jim Sway of the Unites States, is extremely excited about the design. "I think it's going to be an absolute amazing thing to behold. I mean, who builds out of bamboo any more? It's going to like the 9th or 10th wonder of the world and people will flock from all over just to see it."
Fung, a recent graduate from the Chinese Institute of Architecture, had decided that he wanted his first project to be something that everyone would remember. "I've always loved building things, from the Lincoln Logs to the Legos and even taking apart my Transformers and to rebuilding them into larger, meaner creatures. It's fun. It's what I do, and I do it good."
"He's thought of everything," states Sway, "all the safety precautions and emergency items that go into building. All the bamboo is soaked in a fire-retardant solution for 24 hours, then baked and sprayed with a space-age polymer, but not before the notches are cut out just those old-timey Lincoln Logs. This stuff is as strong as steel when you get down to it."
Sway plans to charge a nominal fee to enter the building, where Fung Sway will have their offices. Plans for 3 other buildings made from materials ranging from aluminum cans to used popsicle sticks are now in the works also.
