Williams' Grammy Appearance Nets Eight Voice Changes In 72 Seconds

Williams Backstage at the Grammy Awards

Williams Backstage at the Grammy Awards

New York, NY (Associated Press) - On a star-studded night when many celebrities would take the stage in a triumphant haze and blaze of glory, Robin Williams did the same and carried with him the harrowing pace of eight voice changes during his seventy-two second acceptance speech for Best Comedy Album at the 45th annual Grammy Awards.

Williams continued his comedic modus operandi by challenging all who would listen with obscure references punctuated by varying voices that are employed, apparently, in association with the "joke" at hand. His pauses were expertly timed to let the crowd know exactly when it was time to laugh.

The voice changes-per-second, then, means that every nine seconds introduced a new character. This outpaced Williams' ratio from a Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance earlier this year, when he changed voices every 15.29 seconds. Taking into account that Leno might have been speaking as much as half of the time, however, Williams would then be closer to his usual pace.

No Las Vegas houses took action on the over/under for Williams' voice changes, however, because it was not anticipated that he would have any chance of winning the award as he was competing against four truly funny comedians.
