Charlotte, NC (Associated Press) Carolina Panther Shane Burton had the defense off to a great start Sunday when he blocked a field goal early in the first quarter. The play ended the Atlanta Falcon's first drive at the Panther 28 yard-line and gave the ball to a hungry Carolina offense.
"I just waited until the ball was snapped, then I jumped as high as I could and felt it hit my left hand hard," Burton said. "I was very glad," he added. The ball trickled to the sixteen yard line where Carolina took over. It was Burton's seventh career block.
Had it not been for Burton's early heroics, the score could easily have been 44-0. "That was three points taken off the board, as far as I'm concerned," said coach John Fox. "We practiced that all week."
The defense could not support the early pace, however, and eventually surrendered 41 points. In two games against the Falcons this season, the Panthers have been outscored 71-0. "But it could have been 74-0," Fox pointed out.
